Today June 20th 2025 marks the day we accepted the challenge to try and restore the Six Toed Cat and the countdown timer began!
Phase one involves no small feat. Securing a 40 ft section of Cat’s port side triple decks that several of the support “slid” off the side of her superdeck and now that section is freehanging on the upper two composite decks and causing extreme stress to the entire ship.
Air of Excitement
There is an air of excitement among the cast, crew, ownership and former ownership group. We all want to see Six Toe float again and finally put to rest the lingering pain caused by Hurricane Ian. Of course this is just one story among thousands of vessels that were left damaged or destroyed by the record making storm. However, we intend to add just one more to the “win” column on the recovery side!
The Restoration Plan
The plan to restore Six Toe to her former glory and watery home has many facets but, the first 90 day goal is to get her watertight and lift her back into the sea.
Phase One
Phase one involves no small feat. Securing a 40 ft section of Cat’s port side triple decks that several of the support “slid” off the side of her superdeck and now that section is freehanging on the upper two composite decks and causing extreme stress to the entire ship.
If you don’t understand all the terms or can’t visualize everything at this point, don’t worry we will detail as we go in examples and some layman’s terms so you can grasp exactly the complexity of the operation as it unfolds.
Phase Two
Phase two will be the longest of the first 3 phases in the 90 day plan. Every breach of Cat’s Hull below the waterline that would take on water and lead to her end has to be fixed and made structurally sound.
There are numerous cracks and in some cases a few gaping holes in her hull and these will incur some rather costly and time consuming repairs as working with fiberglass and composite materials especially on a 160 ton vessel adds some interesting complexities.
Phase Three
Phase three will involve lifting and turning operations so that Six Toe can be gently rolled back into her watery home.
She currently sits parallel to the shoreline and has to be turned so that her bow (the front) points towards the water. Then one lifted and turned, specially designed air bags will be placed under hull and all 160 tons of her will be gently supported as she rolls along these bags back into the waters of her home.
There you have it! The first 90 days…. No small feat huh? 🙂 Be sure to subscribe and tune in to the adventure!
